Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, a soft tissue structure which sits above the joint. There are many locations in the body where bursa sacs are present and normally are not irritated. When an irritation occurs, the bursa sac becomes filled with fluid causing an inflammation, or bursitis. Many times this can be successfully treated with anti-inflammatory medications, altered activity and exercise treatment. At times, injection treatment can be used and can often be successful in treating the condition. Occasionally surgical removal of the bursa sac can help decrease the residual discomfort associated with bursitis.
